Brazilian beef exporters experienced an 8% increase in 2020 to 2.02 million metric tons. That’s according to the Brazilian beef industry association, Abrafrigo, which also reported revenue from beef exports last year was 11% higher at $ 8.4 billion.
Abrafrigo expects a 5% increase in the volume of Brazilian beef exports by 2021.
“For 2021, Abrafrigo expects a continuation of the pace of Chinese purchases and some increased imports from the European Union, Arab countries and new markets, as the global economic situation improves thanks to the commencement of vaccination against COVID-19 and resumption of consumption of food outside the home, “the organization said in a statement.
China was the biggest buyer of Brazilian beef last year, with 1.18 billion metric tons imported via the continent and Hong Kong. Egypt is the second largest customer with 127,953 metric tons, down 23%.
The United States was among the top four importers of Brazilian beef last year, when it gained 59,544 metric tons, up 53.8% year-on-year, due to the opening of the US market for fresh Brazilian beef in February 2020.
